Renee Cruz Tovar, who friends and family called “Cooky”, was a 24-year-old employee at LeeWard’s of Elgin. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and was a graduate of St. Edward High School (Class of 1973). Renee was last seen purchasing cigarettes from a local convenience store on November 23, 1979. The following day, her roommate discovered her, deceased, inside their shared residence located in the 100 block of S. Liberty Street. She had been struck and cut with a bladed weapon. Renee’s murder was the final murder of the 1970’s in Elgin, and it remains unsolved to this day.
