Five-year-old Cesar Ayala lived in an apartment unit in the 200 block of Beverly Terrace with his family, including 3-year-old Monti Ayala and 1-year-old Amber Thorpe. In the evening hours of September 15, 1988, the Elgin Fire Department and the Elgin Police Department responded to the apartment complex for a fire. Multiple tenants from the building were evacuated and several fire fighters were injured in the blaze. Cesar, Monti, and Amber subsequently died from injuries sustained in the fire. The fire was determined to be suspicious in nature.
